Quick answer

A Sub-Inspector in the Central Bureau of Investigation is the entry rank of the CBI's investigating officers, recruited through SSC CGL. This profile explains what the CBI investigates and an SI's powers, the pay level and special allowance, the physical standards checked after selection, training at the CBI Academy, and who the post suits.

Sub-Inspector in the Central Bureau of Investigation is the one CGL post that makes a graduate an investigating police officer in a national agency. It sits in the same examination as the desk posts, at the same pay level as many of them, but the job is not like theirs: it involves investigation, police powers and physical standards. This profile describes it from the CBI's own pages and SSC's 2026 notice.

What the CBI Does

The CBI describes itself as "functioning under Dept. of Personnel, Ministry of Personnel, Pension & Public Grievances" and as "the premier investigating police agency in India". Its FAQ lists three investigation divisions:

  • Anti-Corruption, for cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act against central government employees and those of central public sector bodies. The FAQ calls it the largest division.
  • Economic Offences, for "major financial scams and serious economic frauds", including bank fraud, fake currency and cyber crime.
  • Special Crimes, for "serious, sensational and organized crime", taken up at a state government's request or on a court's order.

The CBI does not handle routine crime. Its FAQ says plainly that it "does not take up investigation of general and routine nature of crime as the Police forces of the State and Union Territories are meant to investigate such crime."

An SI's Powers

The CBI's powers come from the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946. Under the Act, it can investigate on its own only in the Union Territories. Investigating within a state needs that state's consent under section 6, unless the Supreme Court or a High Court orders the investigation. Inside that jurisdiction, the CBI says, "The executive officers of CBI of the rank of Sub Inspector and above, exercise all powers of a station office in-charge of the police station for the concerned area for the purpose of investigation."

So a CBI Sub-Inspector holds an investigating officer's powers from the first rank, on the CBI's kind of case: corruption, financial fraud and serious crime rather than routine policing. For how the SI rank works in state police, see the state police SI guide and police constable vs SI.

Pay and Allowance

The 2026 CGL notice lists "Sub Inspector, Central Bureau of Investigation" at Pay Level 7 (₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400), Group B. On top of the usual central allowances, the CBI's FAQ says "All the executive officers of CBI from the rank of constable to the Director get special allowance. The rate is 20% of the pay for all the officials." For how pay is built up from the basic, see the police salary guide and central government salary deductions.

Recruitment

The CBI's FAQ says "CBI recruits Sub-inspectors through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC)". The route is CGL:

  • Qualification. A bachelor's degree in any subject.
  • Age. 20 to 30 years as on 1 August 2026, before relaxation. That is a higher minimum than many CGL posts, which start at 18.
  • Examination. The same Tier-I and Tier-II as every CGL post; there is no separate CBI paper.
  • Disability. The notice lists the CBI SI post as "not identified suitable for PwD candidates".
  • Service liability. Like all CGL posts, it carries all-India service liability.

Physical Standards

The notice's Annexure-XV sets these for the CBI SI post:

MenWomen
Height165 cm150 cm
Chest76 cm with expansionNo requirement
Distant vision (with or without glasses)6/6 in one eye, 6/9 in the otherSame
Near vision0.6 in one eye, 0.8 in the otherSame

The height standard is relaxed by 5 cm for hillsmen and tribals. Unlike the CBIC inspector posts, the annexure lists no walking or cycling test for this post.

The timing matters. Under para 15.9, these standards are measured "by the User Department concerned after final selection and nomination", and "If a candidate fails in such tests, his candidature may not be subsequently considered for any other post/ department." A candidate who ranks the CBI SI post high in their preferences and then fails the height or eyesight test can lose CGL altogether. Measure yourself before you set your preferences.

Training

New Sub-Inspectors train at the CBI Academy in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, whose basic courses include a "Basic course for Sub-Inspectors". The academy also runs courses throughout an officer's career.

Career Path

The rank above Sub-Inspector is Inspector. The CBI's FAQ notes that it "also inducts officers in the ranks of Inspector of Police and above from the State and Union Territory Police forces on deputation", so higher posts are not filled only by promoting the CBI's own Sub-Inspectors. The CBI does not publish a fixed timeline for promotion, so treat any figure you see as an estimate.

Who Suits This Role

CBI SI suits a graduate who wants investigative police work rather than a desk post, is comfortable working on corruption and fraud cases, which turn on documents and evidence, and meets the physical and eyesight standards. It suits less well someone who wants fixed hours or a home posting, or who does not meet the standards. Failing them after selection costs more than leaving the post out of your preferences. For CGL's desk posts, see the Assistant Section Officer profile.
