Defence Salary: Rank-Wise Pay, Allowances & In-Hand Salary

Defence personnel are paid on the same 7th CPC pay matrix (Level 1–18) used across the rest of the central government, but with one structural difference that changes the numbers meaningfully: Military Service Pay (MSP), added on top of basic pay and — unlike most allowances — treated as part of the base for calculating DA and HRA. Agniveers, recruited under the Agnipath scheme, sit entirely outside this system with their own separate pay structure. This page covers both. Training Stipend: Before You're Commissioned

NDA cadets receive no monthly salary during their three years at NDA itself — training, food, accommodation and uniforms are fully covered by the government. Once cadets move to their service-specific academy (IMA, INA or AFA) for final-year officer training, they receive a fixed stipend of ₹56,100 a month — the same figure as a freshly commissioned Lieutenant's starting basic pay, though during this stipend period it isn't yet a "salary" in the full sense (allowances and MSP apply only after commissioning).

Officer Rank Pay (7th CPC Defence Matrix)

On top of this, officers from Lieutenant through Brigadier receive Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 a month — for example, a Captain's basic pay of ₹61,300 plus MSP of ₹15,500 gives a combined ₹76,800 before DA, HRA and other allowances.

Soldier and JCO Pay

Soldiers and JCOs (Level 1–9) receive Military Service Pay of ₹5,200 a month — lower than the officer rate, but still a meaningful addition to basic pay.

Why Military Service Pay Matters More Than Its Face Value

This is the detail most salary estimates miss: MSP is treated as part of basic pay when calculating DA, HRA and other percentage-based allowances. This means defence personnel effectively earn DA and HRA on a higher combined base than a civilian government employee at the same Pay Level — a Lieutenant's DA and HRA are calculated on ₹56,100 + ₹15,500 = ₹71,600, not on ₹56,100 alone.

These figures are illustrative and exclude Transport Allowance and any posting-specific allowances (below) — actual gross pay will be higher once those are added, and in-hand pay after deductions will be lower than gross.

Defence-Specific Allowances

These don't exist in civilian government or banking pay at all, and can add substantially to take-home pay depending on posting:

• Siachen Allowance: approximately ₹42,500 a month, for personnel serving in the Siachen Glacier area (paid in addition to Field Area Allowance, but not alongside High Altitude Allowance).
• High Altitude Allowance: for postings above 15,000 ft (excluding Siachen), tiered by category — roughly ₹3,400 (Category I), ₹5,300 (Category II), up to ₹25,000 a month (Category III) depending on altitude and conditions.
• Flying Allowance: approximately ₹25,000 a month for pilots and Army Aviators in flying roles.
• Para Allowance: approximately ₹1,400 a month for parachute-qualified personnel, with Para Commandos potentially also drawing High Altitude, Siachen, Counter-Insurgency or Hard Area allowances depending on posting.

These are posting- and role-specific, not universal — a desk-posted officer in a peacetime station won't draw Siachen or High Altitude Allowance, while a soldier posted to Siachen draws a substantial addition on top of standard pay.

Agniveer Pay: A Separate System

Agniveers are not paid on the 7th CPC defence matrix — Agnipath uses its own fixed package structure, rising annually over the four-year tenure:

The gap between gross and in-hand exists because 30% of the monthly package is mandatorily contributed to the Seva Nidhi corpus fund, matched by an equal government contribution. Over four years, this builds a corpus — commonly cited around ₹11.71 lakh, fully exempt from income tax, paid out on completing the four-year tenure. Those selected for regular long-term service (up to 25%, based on merit) transition onto the standard defence pay matrix described above; the rest exit with the Seva Nidhi payout, an Agniveer Skill Certificate, and (per current policy) a reservation quota in CAPF constable recruitment.
