A complete guide to NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti) teacher recruitment — what Navodaya Vidyalayas are, eligibility for TGT and PGT posts, the selection process, other teaching and non-teaching posts NVS recruits for, and how NVS differs from KVS.
Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) runs the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) network — 661 fully residential, free, co-educational schools across India, established specifically to bring high-quality education to talented children predominantly from rural areas, from Class 6 through Class 12. Unlike KVS, JNVs don't have a primary (Classes 1–5) section, which means NVS's teacher recruitment structure is genuinely different from KVS's — no PRT posts.

This guide covers TGT and PGT eligibility, the selection process, other posts NVS recruits for, and salary. See the teaching exams in India overview and our KVS guide for how NVS compares to KVS.
What Makes NVS Different
JNVs are fully residential — students board at the school from Class 6 onward, with at least 75% of seats reserved for rural-area candidates within each district and the remainder open on merit. This residential, rural-focused structure means NVS teachers often live on or near campus and take on responsibilities beyond classroom teaching (hostel supervision, extracurricular oversight) more than a typical day-school posting would involve.
NVS TGT and PGT Eligibility
TGT: a Bachelor's degree (with at least 50% marks) in the relevant subject, plus a B.Ed, plus a qualified CTET Paper 2 — CTET Paper 2 is specifically mandatory for NVS TGT posts. Subjects recruited include core academic subjects alongside Art, Music and Physical Education Teacher (PET) roles, categorised as Miscellaneous subjects.
PGT: a Master's degree (with at least 50% marks) in the relevant subject, plus a B.Ed. PGT subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, English, Commerce, Economics, Geography, History, Hindi, and Computer Science.
Since JNVs don't run a primary section, NVS does not recruit PRT posts — unlike KVS, which does.
Age Limits: Regular vs Contractual Recruitment
NVS runs two genuinely different types of hiring cycles, with very different age limits:
- Regular recruitment (permanent posts): commonly cited around a maximum of 35 years for TGT, with PGT typically following a somewhat higher ceiling — confirm exact current figures from the specific notification.
- Contractual recruitment (temporary, often filling vacancy gaps between regular cycles): notably more relaxed, with age limits commonly cited up to around 50 years for TGT, PGT and Female Staff Nurse posts, and even higher (around 65 years) for ex-NVS or superannuated government school teachers re-engaged on contract.
If you see very different NVS age limits in different places, check which recruitment type (regular vs contractual) that figure applies to before assuming a contradiction.
NVS Selection Process
For regular TGT and PGT posts, selection is based on a written test followed by an interview (for TGT, typically structured across a Tier 1/Tier 2 written stage), assessing subject knowledge, teaching aptitude, reasoning ability and professional skills, followed by document verification and personal interaction. Contractual recruitment cycles generally use a shorter process — merit-based shortlisting, document verification and a personal interaction — since they're filling temporary vacancies rather than running a full competitive cycle.
Other Posts NVS Recruits For
Beyond TGT and PGT, NVS recruitment cycles commonly include:
- Administrative: Principal, Vice Principal.
- Non-teaching/support: Female Staff Nurse, Hostel Superintendent, Counselor, Librarian, Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS), Lab Attendant, and Catering Assistant.
Given the residential nature of JNVs, several of these roles (Hostel Superintendent, Staff Nurse, Catering Assistant) exist specifically because students live on campus — a category of posts you won't see in a typical day-school recruitment cycle.
NVS Salary
NVS TGT and PGT follow the same 7th CPC pay structure as other central government teaching posts — commonly cited at Pay Level 7 (₹44,900 basic) for TGT and Level 8 (₹47,600 basic) for PGT, broadly in line with KVS's pay levels for the same posts. See our KVS guide for the fuller salary calculation, which applies similarly here.
Who Should Consider NVS?
NVS suits TGT/PGT-qualified candidates comfortable with residential-school life — living on or near campus, and taking on responsibilities beyond the classroom — and drawn specifically to teaching in a rural-focused, merit-based residential system rather than a typical urban day school. If residential postings aren't for you, KVS (day schools, broader urban/semi-urban presence) may be a better fit despite the largely similar qualification and pay structure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NVS recruit PRT (Primary Teacher) posts?
No. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas run Classes 6–12 only, with no primary section — so NVS doesn't have PRT posts the way KVS does.
Is CTET required for NVS TGT?
Yes — CTET Paper 2 is specifically mandatory for NVS TGT posts, alongside the Bachelor's degree and B.Ed requirement.
What is the difference between NVS regular and contractual recruitment?
Regular recruitment fills permanent posts through a full competitive written-exam-plus-interview process, with tighter age limits (commonly around 35 for TGT). Contractual recruitment fills temporary vacancies through a shorter process, with much more relaxed age limits (commonly up to 50, or higher for re-engaged retired teachers).
What other posts does NVS recruit for besides teachers?
Principal and Vice Principal (administrative), plus non-teaching/support posts like Staff Nurse, Hostel Superintendent, Counselor, Librarian, LDC, MTS, Lab Attendant and Catering Assistant — several of these exist specifically because JNVs are residential schools.
How does NVS salary compare to KVS?
Broadly similar — both follow 7th CPC pay levels, with TGT commonly at Level 7 (₹44,900 basic) and PGT at Level 8 (₹47,600 basic) in both organisations.
Is NVS teaching a residential posting?
Generally yes, since JNVs are fully residential schools — teachers typically live on or near campus, which is a genuine lifestyle difference from a typical day-school teaching post.
In Summary
NVS recruitment is structurally similar to KVS for TGT and PGT (same CTET requirement pattern, similar pay levels) but comes with a meaningfully different context — residential schools, a rural-focus mandate, no PRT posts, and a set of support roles (Hostel Superintendent, Staff Nurse) unique to that residential setup. Confirm whether a given age limit or process detail applies to NVS's regular or contractual recruitment track before relying on it, since the two differ substantially.
