Experience Calculator
Posts that ask for experience count it up to a date the notification sets, usually the closing date. Add each job you have held, and this counts your experience in years, months and days, takes off any breaks, and tells you whether it meets the requirement.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the date you joined and the date you left each job. For your present job, the date to count up to is normally the last date of application.
- Use “Add another job” for each earlier job, up to five.
- Enter any break within a job, in months.
- Enter the experience the post requires, in years and months.
- Calculate to see your experience and whether it is enough.
How it is calculated
Each job is counted from the day you joined to the day you left, both days included, so 1 June 2021 to 31 May 2026 is exactly five years.
The completed months of each job are added together. The days left over from each are pooled, and every thirty of them make another month. Periods that overlap are refused, because they would count the same time twice.
Breaks are taken off, because recruiters count the time you actually worked. Only completed months are held against the requirement.
Whether experience must be in a particular field, after a particular qualification, or in a government organisation is set by each notification. This counts the time; the notification decides which time counts.
Worked example
Two jobs — 1 January 2019 to 15 June 2020, and 1 January 2021 to 20 March 2023 — against a requirement of 3 years 6 months: 1 year 5 months 15 days and 2 years 2 months 20 days make 3 years 8 months 5 days, so the requirement is met.

Does experience before my degree count?
Often not. Many notifications count only experience gained after the essential qualification. Check the wording for “post-qualification experience”.
Is internship or apprenticeship counted?
Only if the notification says so. Most count paid, regular employment and exclude training periods.
