CDS Leads to Four Different Academies

• IMA (Indian Military Academy), Dehradun — Army, Permanent Commission.
• INA (Indian Naval Academy), Ezhimala — Navy, Permanent Commission.
• AFA (Air Force Academy), Dundigal — Air Force, Flying or Ground Duty branches.
• OTA (Officers' Training Academy), Chennai — Army, Short Service Commission (a fixed-tenure commission, not a full career by default, though extension/permanent-commission options exist depending on branch and policy at the time).

This Permanent vs Short Service distinction matters as much as which service you're joining — IMA, INA and AFA lead to a full defence career by default, while OTA is explicitly a shorter-tenure commission.

CDS Eligibility by Academy

Final-year students can apply provisionally, subject to furnishing proof of passing by the date specified in that cycle's notification. Marital status: unmarried status is required across IMA, INA and AFA; OTA is open to both married and unmarried women, while male candidates must be unmarried. As with NDA, exact date-of-birth windows are set fresh for each CDS cycle (CDS 1 and CDS 2 run separately each year) — always check the current notification rather than assuming last cycle's range applies.

CDS Exam Pattern

The written exam differs by academy in total marks, though the paper structure is broadly similar:

All papers are objective-type, set in Hindi and English, with 1 mark per correct answer and 1/3 mark deducted per wrong answer (no penalty for unattempted questions). Candidates targeting OTA specifically don't need to prepare Mathematics at all, unlike IMA/INA/AFA aspirants.

CDS Selection Process

Written exam → SSB interview → Medical Examination → Merit list based on combined written and SSB scores. Training Duration and Commission Type

Training length and what it leads to differ meaningfully by academy:

• IMA: 18 months, leading to a Permanent Commission in the Army.
• INA: an orientation course of roughly 22 weeks for CDS entrants, leading to a Permanent Commission in the Navy.
• AFA: 74 weeks for Flying and Technical branches, or 52 weeks for Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches.
• OTA: 49 weeks, leading to a Short Service Commission — open to both men and women, unlike IMA/INA which are currently male-entry academies under CDS specifically (this is an area of evolving policy, so confirm current eligibility against the latest notification rather than assuming it's fixed).
