Government Exams After 12th: SSC, Railways, Defence and Other Routes

Quick answer
After Class 12 the main central routes are SSC's CHSL and Stenographer examinations, the railways' undergraduate NTPC posts and UPSC's NDA. This guide compares what each asks for, the pay level it leads to, the age window, and whether you can apply before your 12th result — from the current official notices.
Class 12 opens most of the central government's entry-level clerical and defence officer routes. They differ in more than the job: some take you before your result is out and some do not, one needs mathematics, and the defence route has an age window of just three years. This guide sets the main routes side by side from their current notices.

SSC CHSL: Clerks and Data Entry Operators
The Combined Higher Secondary (10+2) Level Examination recruits Lower Division Clerks and Junior Secretariat Assistants at "Pay Level-2 (Rs. 19,900-63,200)" and Data Entry Operators at Levels 4 and 5. The qualification is "12th Standard or equivalent", with one exception: Data Entry Operators in three named offices need "12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject".
You can apply while waiting for your result: "The candidates who have appeared in their 12th Standard or equivalent examination can also apply", provided they pass by 7 October 2026. Selection includes a typing test for clerks — 35 words a minute in English or 30 in Hindi — and a data-entry speed test for DEOs. The SSC exams after 12th guide covers SSC's 12th-level examinations in more detail.
SSC Stenographer: A Shorthand Route
The Stenographer Grade 'C' and 'D' examination recruits "Stenographer Grade 'C' (Group 'B', Non- Gazetted)" and Grade D posts in Group C. The qualification is 12th pass by 1 August 2026, and the result "must have been declared" by that date. The skill test is a ten-minute dictation "at the speed of 100 words per minute … for the post of Stenographer Grade 'C' and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade 'D'", transcribed on a computer.
RRB NTPC (Undergraduate): Railway Clerks
The railways' undergraduate Non-Technical Popular Categories recruit to clerical and commercial posts at Levels 2 and 3, from a Commercial cum Ticket Clerk at Level 3 to Junior Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk at Level 2. The qualification is "12th (+2Stage) or its equivalent with not less than 50% marks", with the 50% not insisted on for SC, ST, persons with benchmark disability, ex-servicemen and candidates with higher qualifications.
The railways do not take candidates awaiting results: "Candidates waiting for final results of prescribed educational qualifications are NOT eligible to apply." For how railway recruitment is organised by qualification, see railway jobs by qualification and the RRB NTPC guide.
UPSC NDA: Officer Entry After 12th
The National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination is the main route to a commission straight after school. The qualification depends on the wing:
- Army wing: "12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent".
- Air Force and Naval wings, and the Naval Academy: "12th Class pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics".
Candidates "who are appearing in the 12th Class … can also apply", and must produce proof of passing later. The age window is narrow: for the (II) 2026 examination, only candidates "born not earlier than 01st January 2008 and not later than 01st January 2011" are eligible. On commissioning, a lieutenant is at "Level 10 (56,100 – 1,77,500)". See the NDA physical requirements before you apply.
What Decides Between Them
- Your stream. NDA's Air Force and Naval wings and some CHSL DEO posts need mathematics; the others take any 12th.
- Your result date. CHSL and NDA take candidates still appearing; RRB NTPC does not. The final-year students guide explains the difference.
- Your marks. RRB NTPC asks for 50% for most candidates; the SSC routes ask only for a pass.
- Your age. NDA's window covers only three years of birth dates; the clerical routes run to 27 or 30.
- The skill. Typing for CHSL clerks, shorthand for stenographers, none for NDA's written stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which government exams can I take after 12th?
The main central routes are SSC CHSL, SSC Stenographer, the railways' undergraduate NTPC posts and UPSC's NDA, alongside state-level clerical and police recruitments. Each has its own age, marks and stream conditions.
Can I apply for SSC CHSL before my 12th result?
Yes. The 2026 notice lets candidates who have appeared in Class 12 apply, provided they hold the qualification by 7 October 2026.
Do I need mathematics in 12th for government jobs?
For some posts. NDA's Air Force and Naval wings need physics, chemistry and mathematics, and Data Entry Operators in three offices under CHSL need science with mathematics. Most other 12th-level posts take any stream.
Does RRB NTPC need 50% in 12th?
For most candidates, yes. The undergraduate CEN 07/2026 asks for at least 50% in aggregate, but not for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates or those with higher qualifications.
What pay level do 12th-level posts start at?
Mostly Level 2, with some at Levels 3 to 5 — LDC/JSA under CHSL and most NTPC clerks at Level 2, NTPC's ticket clerk at Level 3, and CHSL's DEOs at Levels 4 and 5. NDA leads to Level 10 on commissioning.
In Summary
After Class 12, SSC's CHSL and Stenographer examinations and the railways' undergraduate NTPC posts lead to clerical posts at Levels 2 to 5, and UPSC's NDA to an officer's commission at Level 10. They differ in stream (NDA's Air Force and Naval wings need mathematics), marks (NTPC asks 50%), timing (CHSL and NDA take candidates still appearing; NTPC does not) and age (NDA's window is three years).
