Government Exams After ITI: Railways, Defence and Other Routes

Quick answer

An ITI certificate is the qualification the railways build their technical entry posts around — Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician and Level 1 posts. This guide compares which trades each accepts, the pay and age, whether a diploma can replace the ITI, and how an ITI helps elsewhere, from the current official notices.

For an ITI holder the largest central employer is the railways, which recruit drivers' assistants, technicians and trackside staff on the strength of a trade certificate. The routes differ in which trades they accept and — a point that catches people out — in whether a diploma can stand in for the ITI. This guide sets them out from their current notices.

For every live vacancy open to you today, see jobs for ITI holders, or all engineering vacancies. On 15 October 2026, 129 live job posts on SarkariJobTrack accepted an ITI.

RRB Assistant Loco Pilot

The Assistant Loco Pilot works alongside the loco pilot on the footplate. CEN 01/2026 recruits at "Level-2" with an initial pay of ₹19,900 and an age limit of 18 to 30. The qualification is "Matriculation / SSLC plus ITI from recognised institutions of NCVT/SCVT" in a listed trade — among them Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio & TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Mechanic (Diesel), Turner and Machinist — or a course completed act apprenticeship in those trades.

Unusually, it also accepts higher qualifications: a "three years Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile Engineering … in lieu of ITI", and the note that a "Degree in the Engineering disciplines as above will also be acceptable in lieu of Diploma in Engineering". The medical standard is A-1, the strictest — see the RRB ALP guide and the medical examination guide.

RRB Technician

CEN 02/2026 recruits Technicians across mechanical, electrical, signal and track departments. Most posts are Technician Grade III at Level 2, with Technician Grade I Signal at Level 5; the age is 18 to 30 for Grade III and 18 to 33 for Grade I Signal, as on 1 July 2026. Each post names its trades — the Grade III track machine post, for example, asks for "Matriculation / SSLC plus ITI" in "the trade of Fitter / Electrician / Electronics Mechanic / Instrument Mechanic / Mechanic Mechatronics / Mechanic Diesel / Mechanic Motor Vehicle / Welder / Machinist", or the matching apprenticeship. Check that your trade is listed for the post you choose.

RRB Level 1: An ITI Is Enough, but Not Required

The railways' Level 1 posts accept "10th pass or ITI or equivalent or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC)", so an ITI is one route in rather than a requirement. The notice is firm that higher technical qualifications do not replace it: "Diploma /Degree in Engineering will not be accepted in lieu of Course Completed Act Apprentices/ITI for the post of Level-1 unless otherwise specified." See the RRB Group D guide.

The contrast with the Assistant Loco Pilot rule is the thing to remember: for ALP a diploma can replace the ITI; for Level 1 it cannot.

Awaiting Your Result

The railway notices do not take candidates still waiting for their ITI result. CEN 01/2026 requires the qualification "as on the CLOSING DATE", and states: "Those awaiting results of the final examination for the prescribed qualification are not eligible and hence should not apply."

An ITI Elsewhere

An ITI also counts for more than eligibility in some selections. The Army's Agniveer notification for the 2027 recruiting year gives bonus marks for "10th plus two year course at ITI" — 20 marks — in the selection, on top of the Class 10 qualification. See the Agniveer guide. For the railways' full spread of posts by qualification, see railway jobs by qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government jobs can I get after ITI?

The main central routes are the railways' Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician and Level 1 posts, alongside defence, state and public sector technical posts. Check that your trade is listed for each post.

Which ITI trades are accepted for RRB ALP?

CEN 01/2026 lists Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic, Mechanic (Radio & TV), Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic (Motor Vehicle), Wireman, Tractor Mechanic, Armature & Coil Winder, Mechanic (Diesel), Heat Engine, Turner, Machinist and Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Mechanic.

Can I apply for RRB ALP with a diploma instead of ITI?

Yes. CEN 01/2026 accepts a three-year diploma in mechanical, electrical, electronics or automobile engineering in place of the ITI, and an engineering degree in place of the diploma.

Can a diploma replace ITI for RRB Group D?

No. The Level 1 notice says a diploma or degree in engineering will not be accepted in place of ITI or a completed apprenticeship, unless otherwise specified. Class 10 alone is, however, a qualifying route.

Can I apply while waiting for my ITI result?

Not for railway recruitments. The notices require the qualification by the closing date and exclude candidates awaiting results.

In Summary

An ITI leads mainly to the railways: Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician Grade III at Level 2, Technician Grade I Signal at Level 5, and Level 1 posts where ITI is one of several routes. Each post names its trades, so check yours. The railways differ on diplomas — ALP accepts one in place of the ITI, Level 1 does not — and none takes candidates still awaiting results. An ITI can also earn bonus marks in Agniveer selection.
