Government Exams After Graduation: SSC, Banks, Railways and UPSC Routes

- Qualification
- Eligibility
Quick answer
A degree in any discipline opens the widest set of government recruitments — SSC CGL and SI, IBPS and SBI bank examinations, the railways' graduate NTPC posts and UPSC's Civil Services. This guide compares their pay, age windows and, crucially, whether you can apply in your final year, from the current official notices.
Graduation is the qualification most government recruitments are built around. A degree in any subject opens central secretariat, tax and audit posts, bank officer and associate posts, railway supervisory posts and the civil services. The routes look alike on paper but differ in three ways that decide your plans: the pay they lead to, the age window, and whether they take you before your result.

SSC CGL and SSC SI
SSC's Combined Graduate Level examination fills inspector, assistant, auditor and accountant posts across central departments, from Level 4 up to Level 8, and lets final-year students apply provided they hold the degree as on 1 August 2026. The Sub-Inspector examination recruits to Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Forces at "Level-6 (Rs.35,400-Rs.1,12,400/-)"; it asks for a "Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent", and candidates "who have appeared in their Bachelor's degree … can also apply" if they qualify by the closing date. Male Delhi Police candidates also need a driving licence for a motorcycle and car. See the SSC exams after graduation guide.
Bank Examinations: IBPS and SBI
The public sector banks recruit graduates in any discipline through IBPS and, for the State Bank, through SBI's own examination:
- IBPS PO/MT-XVI recruits Probationary Officers at a basic pay of ₹48,480, with an age of 20 to 30. The degree must be in hand: "the final result should have been declared on or before 21.07.2026".
- IBPS CSA-XVI — the clerical examination, now for "Customer Service Associates (CSA)" — recruits at a basic pay of ₹24,050, with an age of 20 to 28. It adds computer literacy, "mandatory", and proficiency in the local language, and also requires the result by its date.
- SBI PO recruits at a starting basic pay of ₹48,480 "(Plus 4 advance increments)", with an age of 21 to 30, and is the bank route that takes final-year students: "Those who are in the Final Year/ Semester of their Graduation may also apply provisionally", proving the degree if called for interview.
Bank pay is set by the banks' own scales, not the government pay matrix. See SBI PO vs IBPS PO, bank PO vs bank clerk and bank PO vs SSC CGL.
Railway Graduate Posts
The railways' graduate Non-Technical Popular Categories recruit Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisors at Level 6 and Goods Train Managers, Junior Accounts Assistants and Senior Clerks at Level 5, with an age limit of 18 to 33 — the widest window among these routes. The qualification is a degree; candidates "waiting for final results of prescribed educational qualifications are NOT eligible". See the RRB NTPC guide.
UPSC Civil Services
The Civil Services Examination recruits to the IAS, IPS, IFS and the central Group A and some Group B services, with an age of 21 to 32 and six attempts for general candidates. It is the most generous on timing: candidates who intend to sit their final examination can take the preliminary and main examinations, and must prove the degree before the interview.
The Timing Rule, Side by Side
The final-year question is answered differently by almost every recruiter here — SBI PO, SSC and UPSC let you in before your result in different ways, while IBPS and the railways do not. The final-year students guide explains each rule; read the clause in your own notice before you plan around it.

In Summary
A degree in any discipline opens SSC CGL and SI at Levels 4 to 8, the IBPS and SBI bank examinations on the banks' own pay scales, the railways' graduate NTPC posts at Levels 5 and 6, and UPSC's Civil Services. They differ on age — from SSC SI's 20 to 25 to NTPC's 18 to 33 — and above all on timing: SBI PO, SSC and UPSC admit candidates before their result in different ways, while IBPS and the railways require it. Read the clause in your notice before you plan your year.
