Government Exams After B.Tech: ESE, GATE-Based PSUs, ISRO and JE Routes

15 Oct 2026

  • Qualification
  • Eligibility

Quick answer

A B.E. or B.Tech opens four kinds of government route — UPSC's Engineering Services, public sector jobs recruited through GATE, ISRO and other scientific employers with their own tests, and Junior Engineer posts open to degree holders. This guide compares the pay, age, marks and final-year rules of each from the current official notices.

An engineering degree leads to more government routes than any other technical qualification, at very different levels — from Group A officer posts to Junior Engineer posts that a diploma also opens. The routes differ in how they select (UPSC examination, GATE score, own test), in the marks they demand, and in whether you can apply in your final year. This guide sets them side by side from their current notices.

For every live vacancy open to you today, see jobs for B.E./B.Tech, or all engineering vacancies. On 15 October 2026, 747 live job posts on SarkariJobTrack accepted a B.E./B.Tech.

UPSC Engineering Services

The Engineering Services Examination recruits to the government's engineering services and posts — mostly Group A, with some Group B posts such as Junior Telecom Officer — in four categories: "Civil Engineering", "Mechanical Engineering", "Electrical Engineering" and "Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering". The 2027 notice asks for "a degree in Engineering" from a recognised university, or one of the listed equivalents such as Sections A and B of the Institution of Engineers' examinations — see the AMIE guide for that route's conditions.

Final-year students can apply: a candidate who has appeared in the qualifying examination but not had the result, or "who intends to appear", "may also apply", provisionally. The age window is 21 to 30 as on 1 January 2027. See the ESE guide.

Public Sector Undertakings Through GATE

Many PSUs recruit engineers on their GATE score rather than their own examination. POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee-2027 advertisement shows the pattern:

  • The GATE paper must match. Candidates need a "Valid Score in the GATE 2027" in "the corresponding paper" — EE for electrical, CE for civil, CS for computer science, EC for electronics.
  • The branch must be listed. "Candidates having qualification degree from a discipline other than those as mentioned above are not eligible", with the corporation reserving a final decision.
  • 60% marks, and final-year students "who expect their final results by 31.08.2027 are also eligible to apply" if they have 60% up to the pre-final examination.
  • The pay is the PSU's own. Training on "the pay scale of Rs.40,000/- 3% - 1,40,000 (IDA)", then absorption as Engineer at ₹50,000 basic.

The advertisement is issued before GATE; vacancies and the application window follow the result. See GATE for PSU recruitment, GATE vs PSU-specific exams and the PSU salary guide for how IDA pay differs.

ISRO and Scientific Employers

ISRO recruits Scientist/Engineer 'SC' — "Group 'A' Gazetted posts" in "Level 10 of Pay Matrix", at a basic pay of ₹56,100 — through its own computer-based test. Advertisement ICRB:03(EMC):2026 asked for a B.E./B.Tech in electronics and communication, mechanical or computer science "with an aggregate minimum of 65% marks or CGPA 6.84/10", with an age limit of 28. It makes no provision for final-year students, and requires that graduation be "completed within the stipulated duration of the course".

Junior Engineer Posts Open to Degree Holders

A degree also opens Junior Engineer posts at Level 6. RRB JE accepts a B.E./B.Tech "in lieu of three years Diploma in Engineering in the same discipline", and many SSC JE posts take a degree or a diploma. These are the same posts a diploma holder competes for, so they are a fallback rather than a degree-level route — and some diploma-level recruitments, such as POWERGRID's Diploma Trainees, bar degree holders altogether; see can a higher qualification make you ineligible.

Branch, and Routes Without GATE

Every route above names branches. Before you prepare, check that yours is listed: does your engineering branch matter and CSE vs IT vs ECE explain how notices handle it. For routes that need neither GATE nor ESE, see engineering jobs without GATE, and for choosing between the two big routes, ESE vs the GATE–PSU route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government exams can I take after B.Tech?

The main routes are UPSC's Engineering Services Examination, PSU recruitment through GATE, ISRO and other scientific employers' own tests, and Junior Engineer posts through SSC and the railways, alongside state engineering services.

Can I apply for ESE in my final year?

Yes. The ESE 2027 notice admits candidates who have appeared in, or intend to appear in, the qualifying examination, provisionally.

What marks do I need for ISRO or PSU jobs?

ISRO's Scientist/Engineer 'SC' advertisement asked for 65% or CGPA 6.84/10; POWERGRID's GATE-based Engineer Trainee recruitment asks for 60%. UPSC's ESE asks only for the degree.

Is a GATE score enough for a PSU job?

It is the first filter. POWERGRID also requires 60% in the degree, a listed branch and the matching GATE paper, and the age limit of 28.

Can a B.Tech holder apply for JE posts?

Yes, for RRB JE and many SSC JE posts, which accept a degree in place of the diploma. Some diploma-level PSU posts, however, bar degree holders.

In Summary

After a B.E./B.Tech, UPSC's Engineering Services lead mainly to Group A posts, with no percentage requirement and a final-year route; GATE-based PSU recruitment such as POWERGRID's asks for 60%, a matching GATE paper and a listed branch, and pays on its own IDA scale; ISRO's Scientist/Engineer 'SC' asks for 65% and pays at Level 10; and Junior Engineer posts at Level 6 are open to degree holders as a fallback. Check your branch, your marks and the final-year rule for each before you prepare.
