How the Calculation Works

Central government teacher salary follows the same 7th CPC mechanics used across other central government posts: Dearness Allowance (DA) is revised twice a year (January and July), calculated on basic pay alone, and currently stands at 60% (effective January 2026). House Rent Allowance (HRA) is city-classified — 30% of basic pay in X-category cities, 20% in Y-category cities, 10% in Z-category cities. Transport Allowance is a fixed amount banded by pay level, which itself draws DA: ₹3,600 + DA for Pay Levels 3–8 (which covers PRT, TGT and PGT) in the cities on the Department of Expenditure's higher-Transport-Allowance list, and ₹1,800 + DA everywhere else. That list is not the same as the HRA X-category list — Lucknow, Jaipur, Kanpur, Patna, Indore, Nagpur, Surat, Kochi, Kozhikode, Coimbatore and Ghaziabad draw the higher Transport Allowance while getting only Y-category HRA.

Worked Example: Illustrative Gross Salary (X-City Posting, Current DA Rate)

These are gross figures at starting basic pay, assuming an X-category posting that is also on the higher-Transport-Allowance list, at the current DA rate. A Y or Z category posting shows a lower HRA line (20% or 10% instead of 30%); a posting off the higher-TPTA list draws ₹1,800 + DA (₹2,880) instead of ₹3,600 + DA (₹5,760). Statutory deductions are smaller than most guides suggest: NPS at 10% of basic-plus-DA, plus CGHS and CGEGIS, comes to roughly 8–9% of gross at these levels, and income tax is close to nil under the default new regime, where the section 87A rebate covers income up to ₹12 lakh. Expect in-hand of roughly ₹66,000 (PRT), ₹83,000 (TGT) and ₹88,000 (PGT).

What's Different from Other Government Salary Structures

Unlike bank employees (who get a Special Allowance and quarterly DA revision on a wider base) or defence officers (who get Military Service Pay counted toward DA/HRA), teacher salary doesn't have an equivalent special component — it follows the standard central government formula (Basic + DA + HRA + TA) without an extra allowance layered into the DA/HRA base. There's also no universal "teaching allowance" — any additional pay (rural/hard-area postings, residential-school responsibilities at NVS, or similar) is employer- or posting-specific rather than a standard, nationwide component.
