Government Jobs After LLB: Marks, Enrolment, Practice and Routes

16 Oct 2026

  • Qualification
  • Recruitment Process

Quick answer

What an LLB opens in government depends on three things the notices check — your marks, whether you are enrolled as an advocate, and how many years you have practised. This guide sorts current government law jobs by those conditions, explains enrolment and the AIBE, and shows what LLB posts are live on the site today.

An LLB is a professional degree, and government recruiters treat it that way. Beyond the degree itself, a law post's notice usually checks three things: your marks in the LLB, whether you are enrolled as an advocate, and how many years you have practised. Those conditions, more than the job title, decide which posts you can apply for this year. This guide sorts the routes by them, using current official notices.

What Is Live on This Site

On 16 October 2026, 40 published records on SarkariJobTrack had at least one post that required an LLB: 65 posts from 31 recruiters. Most are legal posts under several titles, including Law Officer, Legal Assistant, Assistant Manager (Law), Consultant (Legal), Clerk (Legal), Deputy Executive (Contracts) and Director of Regulatory Affairs. Some are contract or consultancy engagements rather than permanent posts, such as "Legal Advisor (on contract/sitting fee basis)". Read each notice's terms.

Condition 1: Your Marks

Marks requirements differ widely:

NoticeLLB marks required
NTPC Assistant Law Officer (Advt 15/25)60% (55% for SC and PwBD)
POWERGRID Officer Trainee (Law) (CC/06/2025)60% (45% for SC, ST and PwBD)
Army JAG Entry, 125th Course55%
IBPS Law Officer, UPSC prosecutor and legal postsNo minimum stated

The PSU and Army notices also name the degree's form. POWERGRID asks for a "Full-time Three years LLB or Five years integrated Law/LLB course", and the JAG notice for an LLB "three years professional after graduation or five years after 10 plus 2 examination". Both forms are accepted.

Condition 2: Enrolment and the AIBE

Some posts require you to be an enrolled advocate. IBPS's Law Officer (Scale I) needs "A Bachelor Degree in Law (LL.B) and enrolled as an advocate with Bar Council". The JAG entry needs candidates to "be eligible for registration as an advocate".

Practising also needs the All India Bar Examination. The Bar Council of India describes it as "a qualifying exam which every practising advocate who has enrolled after 2010 must successfully pass in order to practice before the Courts", and passing it brings a Certificate of Practice. The pass mark is 45% for General and OBC candidates and 40% for SC, ST and specially abled candidates. Final-semester students with no backlogs may register. AIBE-XXII is scheduled for 29 November 2026.

Condition 3: Years of Practice

This is the condition that separates the routes most:

Practice neededRoutes in current notices
NoneCivil Judge posts advertised up to 31 March 2027; CBI's Assistant Public Prosecutor (Level 7); bank Law Officer (Scale I); Army JAG; PSU legal officers through CLAT PG; the Supreme Court's law clerkship (final-year students may apply)
One yearCivil Judge posts advertised from 1 April 2027
Two yearsLaw Officer, Delhi Land and Building Department (Level 7)
Three yearsAssistant Public Prosecutor, Delhi (Level 10, 140 posts); Assistant Legal Adviser, Enforcement Directorate (Level 11)
Five yearsAssistant Public Prosecutor Grade II, Tamil Nadu, in criminal courts
Seven yearsAssistant Legislative Counsel, Indian Legal Service, for a practising lawyer (Level 11)

The judiciary row changed on 21 August 2026. The Supreme Court let all law graduates apply to Civil Judge notices issued up to 31 March 2027, followed by two years of training and clerkship on half pay. The judicial services exam guide explains it.

CLAT PG Is a Job Exam Too

CLAT PG is the entrance test for LLM admission, but some employers recruit on its score. The Army's JAG entry says "CLAT PG 2026 Score is mandatory for all candidates". NTPC and POWERGRID shortlisted law officers on CLAT-2026 scores, and POWERGRID gave CLAT 85% of the final weight. Only the current year's score counts. If you want a PSU or the Army, sit CLAT PG in the year you apply.

Which Route Fits

  • If you are in your final year, apply for the Supreme Court's law clerkship (₹1,00,000 a month for the term) and register for the AIBE.
  • If you have just graduated with 60% or more, PSU legal posts through CLAT PG are open, along with the bank and CBI routes, which set no marks floor.
  • If you want the judiciary, the window up to 31 March 2027 needs no practice. After that, plan on a year at the Bar first.
  • If you are building practice, count the years. Two, three, five and seven years each open further posts.

For all the routes side by side, with selection and pay, see government law jobs. For non-legal options open to any graduate, see government exams after graduation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government jobs can I get right after LLB?

Without practice: Civil Judge posts advertised up to 31 March 2027, CBI's Assistant Public Prosecutor, bank Law Officer (Scale I), the Army JAG entry, PSU legal officer posts through CLAT PG, and the Supreme Court's law clerkship.

Is AIBE compulsory for government law jobs?

Not for every post, but it is for practising: the Bar Council of India requires every advocate enrolled after 2010 to pass it to practise before the courts. Posts that require enrolment or years at the Bar therefore depend on it.

What marks are needed in LLB for PSU jobs?

NTPC and POWERGRID both asked for 60% in their latest law officer notices, relaxed for reserved categories, together with a current CLAT PG score.

Does a three-year LLB count, or only a five-year one?

Both. POWERGRID's and the Army's notices accept either a three-year LLB after graduation or a five-year integrated course.

How many years of practice do I need to become a public prosecutor?

It depends on the post: none for CBI's Assistant Public Prosecutor, three years for Delhi's, and five years of criminal practice for Tamil Nadu's Grade II.

In Summary

After an LLB, three conditions decide your options: marks, enrolment and practice. PSUs ask for 60% and a current CLAT PG score, the Army 55% and CLAT PG, and IBPS and UPSC set no marks floor. Bank Law Officer posts need enrolment, and practising needs the AIBE. Practice runs from none, for the judiciary's transitional window, the bank, CBI, Army, PSU and Supreme Court clerkship routes, to seven years for a legislative counsel. On 16 October 2026 the site had 40 live records requiring an LLB.
