Quick answer
SSC's CHSL and the railways' undergraduate NTPC posts are the two main central clerical recruitments after Class 12. This guide compares their posts and pay levels, age limits, marks requirements, whether you can apply before your 12th result, and their examination stages, from the current official notices.
After Class 12, the central government's two big clerical recruitments are SSC's Combined Higher Secondary Level examination (CHSL) and the railways' Non-Technical Popular Categories for undergraduates (NTPC UG). Both recruit clerks at Level 2. They differ on marks, timing and age, and in what the examination asks of you. This guide sets them side by side from their current notices; the closing section is about which suits whom, not which is better.

Eligibility
Both take Class 12, but on different terms. CHSL asks only for a pass, with one exception — Data Entry Operators in three named offices need "12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject". NTPC UG asks for "not less than 50% marks in the aggregate", though the 50% "is not to be insisted upon in case of SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability/Ex-servicemen and candidates Who possess qualifications higher than 12th".
The timing rule is opposite. CHSL lets "candidates who have appeared in their 12th Standard" apply, provided they pass by the cut-off date; the railways state that "Candidates waiting for final results of prescribed educational qualifications are NOT eligible to apply." The final-year students guide explains why recruiters differ.
The railways' age window is wider: 18 to 30, against CHSL's 18 to 27.
The Examination
SSC CHSL has two computer-based tiers. Tier-I has four parts — English, general intelligence, quantitative aptitude and general awareness — of 25 questions and 50 marks each, in 60 minutes, with "negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer". Tier-II covers mathematical abilities, reasoning, English, general awareness and computer knowledge, and includes the skill or typing test: a data-entry speed test for DEOs and a typing test for LDC/JSA, at 35 words a minute in English or 30 in Hindi.
RRB NTPC (UG) has two computer-based tests. The 1st stage is "of screening nature" — 100 questions in 90 minutes, with general awareness 40, mathematics 30 and general intelligence and reasoning 30 — and shortlists candidates for the 2nd stage at 15 times the vacancies. The 2nd stage has 120 questions in 90 minutes. Both deduct "1/3 mark … for each wrong answer". The typing skill test for the two typist posts "has been dispensed with for CEN No. 07/2026".
Pay and Posts
Both recruit clerks at Level 2. CHSL's Data Entry Operators are at Levels 4 and 5, above anything in NTPC UG; NTPC UG's Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is at Level 3, a level above CHSL's LDC/JSA. CHSL posts are in central ministries and offices; NTPC UG posts are in railway commercial, accounts and operating departments. For the railways' graduate-level clerical posts, see RRB NTPC vs RRB Group D and the RRB NTPC guide.
Which Suits Whom
- If you are still awaiting your 12th result, only CHSL takes you.
- If you scored below 50% in Class 12 and are not in an exempt category, only CHSL is open.
- If you are 28 to 30, only NTPC UG is open.
- If you studied science with mathematics, CHSL's higher-paid DEO posts in the named offices are open to you.
- If typing is your weak point, NTPC UG's 2026 cycle has no typing test; CHSL's LDC/JSA does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SSC CHSL or RRB NTPC better after 12th?
Neither in general. Both recruit clerks at Level 2. CHSL takes candidates before their result and has DEO posts at Levels 4 and 5; NTPC UG needs 50% in Class 12 for most candidates, runs to age 30 and has a Level 3 ticket clerk post.
Does RRB NTPC need 50% in 12th?
For most candidates. CEN 07/2026 asks for 50% in aggregate, but not for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates or those with qualifications higher than Class 12.
Can I apply for SSC CHSL before my 12th result?
Yes. Candidates who have appeared in Class 12 can apply if they pass by 7 October 2026.
Is there a typing test in RRB NTPC UG?
Not in CEN 07/2026, which dispensed with the typing test for the Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist posts.
What is the age limit for CHSL and NTPC UG?
CHSL: 18 to 27 as on 1 August 2026. NTPC UG: 18 to 30 as on 1 January 2027. Relaxations apply in both.
In Summary
SSC CHSL and RRB NTPC (UG) both recruit clerks at Level 2 after Class 12. CHSL takes candidates before their result, asks only for a pass, adds DEO posts at Levels 4 and 5, and tests typing in Tier-II. NTPC UG needs 50% for most candidates and a declared result, runs to age 30, has a Level 3 ticket clerk, and dropped its typing test for 2026. Your result date, marks, age and typing decide between them.
