Bank PO vs RBI Grade B: Officer Roles, Pay, Exams and Who Each Suits

Quick answer

A public sector bank Probationary Officer and an RBI Grade B officer are both graduate officer posts in banking, but in very different institutions and at different levels. This guide compares their pay, age limits, marks requirements, attempt limits and selection stages, from IBPS's PO/MT-XVI and RBI's Grade B (DR) Panel Year 2026 notifications.

For graduates aiming at an officer career in banking, the two most sought-after routes are a Probationary Officer post in a public sector bank and a Grade B officer post in the Reserve Bank of India. Both are officer posts recruited by examination. But RBI Grade B is a central bank post at a markedly higher starting pay, with stricter marks and an attempt limit, while a PO joins a commercial bank's branch-banking career. This guide sets them side by side from their current notices — see the IBPS PO and RBI Grade B exam pages for each cycle's dates.

The Role and Pay

A bank PO is an officer in Junior Management Grade Scale I at a basic pay of ₹48,480. An RBI Grade B officer starts at "a starting basic pay of ₹78,450/-p.m.", in a scale running to ₹1,41,600, with "initial monthly gross emoluments (without HRA)" of about ₹1,54,936 and house rent allowance of 15% of pay where accommodation is not provided. The institutions differ too: a PO joins a commercial bank, while a Grade B officer joins the central bank. See the RBI Grade B guide.

Eligibility

  • Marks. IBPS PO takes "A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline" with no minimum. RBI Grade B (General) asks for "Graduation in any discipline … with minimum 60% marks (50% for SC/ST/PwBD applicants, if the posts are reserved for them) or Post-Graduation in any discipline … with minimum 55% marks".
  • Specialist cadres. RBI also recruits Grade B officers in its economic (DEPR) and statistical (DSIM) departments, which require a master's in economics or statistics-related subjects with 55% — see government exams after post graduation.
  • Attempts. General and EWS candidates "who have already appeared Six times for Phase-I Examination for this post/s in the past, are not eligible to apply"; there is no such limit for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates where posts are reserved for them. IBPS PO's notice sets no attempt limit.
  • Age. Both run to 30; RBI's minimum is 21 and IBPS's 20.

Selection

IBPS PO runs an online preliminary, an online main examination, and then a personality test and common interview, deducting one-fourth of a question's marks for each wrong answer in the objective tests.

RBI Grade B selects through "Written examinations in Phase - I and Phase - II and Interview", with Phase-I online and Phase-II consisting of three papers for the General cadre. The competition is for far fewer posts — 40 in the General cadre in this notice.

Which Suits Whom

  • If your degree is below 60%, RBI Grade B (General) needs a 55% master's instead; the PO route has no minimum.
  • If you have used six Phase-I attempts as a General or EWS candidate, RBI Grade B is closed to you; PO is not.
  • If you want commercial banking, branch work and a wide choice of banks, the PO route.
  • If you want to work in the central bank, and can compete for very few posts, RBI Grade B.

Many candidates prepare for both, since much of the syllabus overlaps. For RBI's support-level route, see bank PO vs RBI Assistant; for other bank comparisons, SBI PO vs IBPS PO.

In Summary

A bank PO is a commercial bank officer at a basic pay of ₹48,480, open to any graduate up to 30, selected through a preliminary, a main examination and an interview. An RBI Grade B officer starts at ₹78,450 in the central bank, needs 60% in graduation or 55% in a master's, has a six-attempt limit for General and EWS candidates, and competes for few posts through two written phases and an interview. Your marks, attempts and the kind of banking you want decide between them.
