Government Salary Calculator

A government salary is basic pay plus allowances that follow it. Choose your pay level and cell — or enter your basic — and your city, and this adds dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance at the rates in force on your date, then takes off NPS and any deductions you enter.

Fills in the pay level. Choose “— select —” to set your own.

With the cell below, instead of typing your basic.

1 at joining, one more for each increment.

Overrides the level and cell when both are given.

Needs your pay level. Not the same list as the X cities for HRA.

Overrides the lookup.

CGHS, CGEGIS, professional tax, loan recoveries — from your pay slip.

Rates in force on this date are used, so a past fixation can be checked against its own rules.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose your post to fill in its pay level, or choose the level and your cell in it (1 at joining) yourself — or type your basic pay if you know it.
  2. Choose your city class for HRA, and whether you are posted in one of the 19 cities with higher transport allowance.
  3. Enter any other allowances, and tick NPS if you joined on or after 1 January 2004.
  4. Enter other deductions from your pay slip to see pay in hand.
  5. Choose the date, and calculate.

How it is calculated

Dearness allowance is basic pay times the DA rate in force on the date you choose. DA is revised every January and July.

House rent allowance is a percentage of basic that depends on the city class, and it steps up as DA crosses set thresholds. It is not paid to anyone living in government accommodation.

Transport allowance comes from the 7th Pay Commission table by pay level and city: ₹7,200 or ₹3,600 from Level 9, ₹3,600 or ₹1,800 for Levels 3 to 8, and ₹1,350 or ₹900 for Levels 1 and 2 — who take the Levels 3 to 8 rate once pay reaches ₹24,200. The 19 higher-rate cities are their own list, not the X cities of HRA. Transport allowance attracts DA too, which is added separately.

NPS is deducted at the employee rate on basic plus DA, and the other deductions you enter are taken off after it. Income tax is not deducted, so the in-hand figure is before tax.

Worked example

An Income Tax Inspector through SSC CGL — Level 7, cell 1, ₹44,900 — in a Y-class city outside the 19 higher-TA cities, in NPS, on 1 August 2026: the working shows DA, HRA and transport allowance at the rates then in force, and pay in hand after NPS.

Questions people ask

Why is my actual in-hand lower than this?

Income tax is deducted from real pay and not here. CGHS, CGEGIS, professional tax and loan recoveries differ from person to person, so enter them from your pay slip as other deductions.

Which cities are X, Y and Z?

X covers the largest metropolitan areas, Y other cities above a population threshold, and Z the rest. The classification is notified by the Ministry of Finance and your office applies it.

Indicative only. The official order or notification governs, and every figure should be checked against it before you act on it.
