Government Exams After B.A.: Teaching, Statistics and Language Routes

16 Oct 2026

  • Qualification
  • Eligibility

Quick answer

A B.A. opens every recruitment open to graduates, and a smaller set of posts where the subjects you studied decide eligibility — teaching posts by subject, statistics posts, and language posts that build on a B.A. This guide shows which subject opens which route, from the current official notices.

A B.A. is a graduate degree, so every recruitment that asks for "a degree in any discipline" is open to you. Beyond those, a B.A. matters through its subjects. A teaching post wants the subject you will teach; a statistics post wants statistics or economics; a translator post wants a language — and some of these routes start at a B.A. but need a Master's to finish. This guide is organised by subject, from the current notices.

For every live vacancy open to you today, see jobs for B.A. graduates, and for all graduate-level routes, jobs for graduates. On 15 October 2026, 80 live job posts on SarkariJobTrack named a B.A. among their accepted qualifications.

Teaching: The Subject Decides

School teaching is the clearest case of a B.A. subject deciding eligibility. KVS and NVS's Recruitment Notification 01/2025, for Trained Graduate Teachers at "Level-7 (Rs.44900-142400)" with an age limit of 35, asked for:

  • The subject in your degree. A "Bachelor/Honours Degree … with at least 50% marks in concerned subject, combination of subjects as well as in the aggregate". For TGT (Hindi) or (English), the language must have been "an Elective/Main subject in at least three years / 06" semesters.
  • For Social Studies, the right combination. Candidates "should have studied any two subjects out of History, Geography, Economics and Political Science at graduation level out of which one must be either History or Geography" as a main subject.
  • A B.Ed. and CTET. A B.Ed. with at least 50% marks, and qualification in the "Central Teachers Eligibility Test (Paper-II)".

So a B.A. in political science and economics alone, without history or geography, does not meet TGT Social Studies. See CTET, PRT vs TGT vs PGT, the TGT job profile and KVS teacher recruitment.

Statistics and Economics: CGL's Specialist Posts

SSC's Combined Graduate Level examination has two posts, both at Level 6, where a B.A.'s subjects count:

  • Junior Statistical Officer: a degree in any subject "with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level", or a degree "with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level".
  • Statistical Investigator Grade-II: a "Bachelor degree in Statistics or Mathematics or Economics or Demography or Population Studies" or related subjects.

A B.A. in economics or statistics opens the second; the first is open to any graduate with mathematics at 60% in Class 12.

Languages: A B.A. Leads to Translator Posts — After a Master's

A B.A. in Hindi or English is the first step to the central government's translator posts, but not the last. SSC's Combined Hindi Translators Examination 2026 recruits Junior Hindi Translators at "Level-6" and Senior Hindi Translators at "Level-7", and asks for a "Master's degree of a recognized University in Hindi with English as a compulsory or elective subject", or in English with Hindi, or another subject with both — plus a translation diploma or experience. A B.A. in Hindi or English is the foundation; the post itself needs the Master's.

The Graduate Routes

For everything else, a B.A. stands with any degree: SSC CGL, the IBPS and SBI bank examinations, the railways' graduate posts, state PSC examinations and UPSC's Civil Services, whose list of optional papers includes history, geography, political science and international relations, and sociology. The government exams after graduation guide compares them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which government jobs can I get after B.A.?

Every graduate-level recruitment, plus posts where your subjects count: TGT teaching posts in your subject (with a B.Ed. and CTET), SSC's statistics posts for economics and statistics graduates, and — after a Master's — translator posts for Hindi and English graduates.

Can I become a KVS TGT with a B.A.?

Yes, in a subject you studied as a main subject, with at least 50% marks, a B.Ed. and CTET Paper-II. For Social Studies, one of your main subjects must be history or geography.

Is a B.A. in Hindi enough for SSC Hindi Translator?

No. The Combined Hindi Translators Examination asks for a Master's degree in Hindi or English (or another subject with both languages), and a translation diploma or experience.

Which B.A. subjects help for SSC CGL?

Economics and statistics open the Statistical Investigator Grade-II post; the Junior Statistical Officer post takes statistics at degree level or 60% in Class 12 mathematics. All other CGL posts take any degree.

Is a B.A. as good as a B.Sc or B.Com for government jobs?

For most graduate recruitments, yes — they take a degree in any discipline. The difference lies in the subject-specific posts each opens.

In Summary

A B.A. is a graduate degree first: it opens SSC, bank, railway, state and UPSC graduate recruitments on equal terms. Its subjects then decide the rest — the teaching subject for KVS and NVS TGT posts, economics or statistics for SSC's statistics posts, and Hindi or English as the foundation for translator posts that need a Master's. Check your main subjects against the post before you prepare.
