Government Exams After BCA and MCA: NIC, Bank IT Officer and Computer Posts

- Qualification
- Eligibility
Quick answer
A BCA is a graduate degree with a computing subject; an MCA is the master's that opens the government's computer-science officer posts. This guide shows which posts each opens — NIC's Scientist-B and assistant posts, IBPS's IT Officer, SSC and IMD posts that name computer applications, and state computer instructor posts — and where a BCA alone falls short, from the current official notices.
Computer applications degrees sit in an awkward place in government notices. Many IT posts are written for engineering graduates, and a BCA is not an engineering degree — so a BCA graduate often qualifies only through the posts that name "computer applications", or by going on to an MCA. This guide sets out what each opens, from the current notices.

NIC: Officer and Assistant Posts
The National Informatics Centre is the central government's largest recruiter of computer graduates. Its two 2026 recruitments show the line between a BCA and an MCA:
- Scientist-B is "a Group-A S&T (Gazetted) post in level 10 (Rs. 56100- Rs.177500)". For computer science and IT it accepts a B.E., B.Tech, M.Sc, "Master Degree in Computer Application" or M.Tech — and, in every case, a "VALID GATE score" in the matching paper. An MCA qualifies; a BCA does not.
- Scientific/Technical Assistant-A is "a Group-B S&T (non-Gazetted) post in level 6", for which the qualification is an "M.Sc./MS/MCA/B.E./B.Tech." Again an MCA qualifies and a BCA does not.
Both required the qualification by their cut-off dates, so final-year students could not apply.
Bank IT Officer: Where a BCA Needs More
IBPS's Specialist Officer recruitment includes an IT Officer stream in Scale I. It asks for a "4 year Engineering/ Technology Degree" in computer science, computer applications, IT or electronics, or a "Post Graduate Degree" in those subjects including "Computer Applications", or — the route for a BCA — "Graduate having passed DOEACC 'B' level". So an MCA meets it directly; a BCA meets it only with the 'B' level certificate.
Posts That Name Computer Applications
Some posts list computer applications alongside science and engineering subjects, and a BCA meets them:
- SSC CGL, Statistical Investigator Grade-II asks for a bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, economics and related subjects, including "Computer Application".
- IMD Scientific Assistant, through SSC's Junior Engineer examination, accepts a degree in "Computer Science or Computer Applications" among other routes.
State and Court Computer Posts
State bodies and courts recruit computer staff on their own rules, and some name a BCA directly:
- Rajasthan Staff Selection Board, Advertisement 07/2026, for Basic Computer Instructors (Level 8) accepted a "Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA)", among other routes, and for Senior Computer Instructors (Level 10) a "Master in Computer Application (MCA)/'B' Level/'C' Level".
- Patna High Court's Technical Assistant recruitment of 2026, at Level 5, asked for a "B.C.A./ I.T.I./ Diploma holder" in computer science or electronics, plus "A minimum relevant experience of 01 year".
See how state recruitment works for who recruits at state level.
The Graduate Routes
A BCA is also a degree in any discipline, so every graduate recruitment is open — SSC CGL, IBPS and SBI bank examinations, the railways' graduate posts and UPSC's Civil Services. See government exams after graduation. For how computing branches are treated against engineering ones, see B.Tech CSE vs IT vs ECE.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which government jobs can I get after BCA?
Every graduate-level recruitment, plus posts that name computer applications — SSC CGL's Statistical Investigator Grade-II, IMD's Scientific Assistant, and state computer posts such as Rajasthan's Basic Computer Instructor. For bank IT Officer posts you also need DOEACC 'B' level.
Can I join NIC with a BCA?
Not as Scientist-B or Scientific/Technical Assistant-A under the 2026 notices, which ask for an MCA, M.Sc, B.E. or B.Tech. An MCA qualifies for both, with a GATE score for Scientist-B.
Does an MCA count for IBPS IT Officer?
Yes. The IT Officer stream accepts a post-graduate degree in computer applications.
Do I need GATE for NIC Scientist-B?
Yes. The 2026 notice requires a valid GATE 2024, 2025 or 2026 score in the matching paper, alongside the degree.
Is a BCA treated as an engineering degree?
No. Posts asking for a B.E. or B.Tech do not accept a BCA. A BCA counts where a notice names computer applications or accepts any degree.
In Summary
A BCA opens every graduate route and the posts that name computer applications — SSC's Statistical Investigator, IMD's Scientific Assistant and state computer posts — but not NIC's posts or, without DOEACC 'B' level, IBPS's IT Officer. An MCA opens those: NIC Scientist-B at Level 10 with a GATE score, NIC's Scientific/Technical Assistant at Level 6, and IBPS's IT Officer in Scale I. Read whether a notice names computer applications or asks for engineering before you apply.
