NDA Eligibility

Age: Candidates must fall within roughly 16.5 to 19.5 years as on the course commencement date. UPSC conducts NDA twice a year (NDA 1 and NDA 2), each with its own specific date-of-birth window stated in that cycle's notification — the exact window shifts between cycles, so match your date of birth against the current notification precisely rather than assuming a fixed range applies every year.

Educational Qualification: For the Army wing, a Class 12th pass in any stream is sufficient. For the Navy, Air Force and Indian Naval Academy (10+2 Cadet Entry) wings, Class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is required — this is a real, easy-to-miss distinction, since "12th pass" alone qualifies you for Army entry but not the other wings.

Marital Status: Candidates must be unmarried at the time of joining, and marriage isn't permitted during training. This applies to both male and female candidates, who have been eligible across all three NDA wings since 2022.

Vacancy split: Vacancies are announced separately for Army, Navy, Air Force and the Naval Academy entry each cycle (for example, a recent cycle notified roughly 208 Army, 42 Navy, 120 Air Force and 24 Naval Academy vacancies) — treat any specific number as tied to that cycle rather than a fixed annual figure.

NDA Exam Pattern

The written exam has two papers, objective-type, totalling 900 marks.

GAT splits into Part A (English, 200 marks) and Part B (General Knowledge, 400 marks). Negative marking differs by paper: approximately 0.83 marks deducted per wrong answer in Mathematics, and approximately 1.33 marks in GAT.

NDA Selection Process

Written exam (900 marks) → SSB interview (also scored out of 900 marks) → combined total out of 1800 marks decides the final merit list. Training and Career Path

Selected candidates train jointly — Army, Navy and Air Force cadets together — for three years at NDA, Khadakwasla (Pune), after which a Baccalaureate degree is awarded. Cadets then move to their service-specific academy for final pre-commission training: Army cadets to IMA (Dehradun), Air Force cadets to AFA (Dundigal, Hyderabad), and Navy cadets to INA (Ezhimala, Kerala) for a further year. During this final year, cadets receive a stipend before being commissioned as officers — a Lieutenant (Army), or the equivalent starting rank in the Navy or Air Force.
