Quick answer
An M.Sc opens two kinds of government research route — a funded fellowship towards a PhD, through CSIR-UGC NET or the biomedical research test, and a scientist post at DRDO, BARC, ICMR, ISRO centres or through UPSC's Geo-Scientist exam. This guide sets out each route's marks, age limit, selection and pay from the current official notices.
An M.Sc is the entry qualification for most of India's government research, but it leads in two different directions. One is a research fellowship, a paid position towards a PhD that is not a job. The other is a scientist post, a permanent government job that some bodies fill directly from M.Sc holders. Many candidates try both at once, so this guide puts them side by side, with each route's marks, age limit, selection and pay from its latest notice.

Route 1: A Research Fellowship
A Junior Research Fellow (JRF) is paid ₹37,000 a month. After two years, and an external assessment by the institution where the fellow is registered for a PhD, the fellowship can be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow (SRF) at ₹42,000. These are the government's rates effective from 1 January 2023. House rent allowance is paid only where hostel accommodation is not available.
The main ways to win a JRF with an M.Sc:
| Joint CSIR-UGC NET, December 2026 | BRET (biomedical research, DHR/ICMR) | |
|---|---|---|
| Subjects | Chemical, Earth/Atmospheric/Ocean/Planetary, Life Sciences and Biotechnology, Mathematical, Physical Sciences | Biomedical sciences |
| Marks needed | 55% in the master's (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwBD and third gender) | 55% in the PG degree for General, EWS and OBC; 50% for SC, ST and PwBD |
| Age limit for JRF | 30, "as on the 1st day of the month in which the examination is concluded i.e. December, 2026" | 35, from 1 April 2025 |
| Final-year students | Can apply, and must complete the master's within two years of the result | Not stated in the FAQ; check the notice |
| Dates | Registration 7 October to 5 November 2026; exam on 19, 22 and 27 December 2026 | BRET-2025 was held on 10 January 2026; 300 candidates were selected |
CSIR-UGC NET decides three outcomes from one test: JRF with Assistant Professor eligibility, Assistant Professor eligibility with PhD admission, or PhD admission only. Each paper has three parts and 200 marks, with negative marking that varies by subject (none in Part C of Mathematical Sciences). From December 2026, the bulletin says, "CSIR and DBT have agreed to award fellowships in Life Sciences and Bio-Technology (LS-BT) subject through Joint CSIR UGC NET Exam". So the life sciences paper now also leads to DBT fellowships, which earlier had their own test, the BET. The JRF age limit can be relaxed by up to five years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwBD and third-gender candidates and for women. The UGC NET guide explains how the JRF and Assistant Professor outcomes differ.
BRET, run by AIIMS New Delhi for the Department of Health Research, awards JRFs in biomedical research at the same ₹37,000. Selected candidates must activate the fellowship within one year.
A fellowship has deadlines of its own. CSIR's terms say a JRF-NET certificate "is two years from the effective date of fellowship". The fellow must register for a PhD within two years to be upgraded to SRF, and the total tenure as JRF and SRF "will not exceed five years".
Route 2: A Scientist Post
Several bodies recruit M.Sc holders straight into scientist posts. None of these posts needs a PhD:
| Post | M.Sc requirement | Age limit | Selection | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DRDO (RAC, Advt 156) | Scientist 'B', Level 10 | "At least First Class Master's Degree in Science" in the discipline, such as physics, chemistry or mathematics | 35 (UR/EWS), 38 (OBC), 40 (SC/ST) | GATE score (80%) and interview (20%) |
| BARC (OCES-2026) | Trainee Scientific Officer, then Scientific Officer 'C', Level 10 | 60% in the M.Sc and 60% in the B.Sc, in subjects such as physics, chemistry, biosciences, geology and geophysics | 26 (General), 29 (OBC), 31 (SC/ST), as on 1 August 2026 | Screening by online exam or GATE score, then interview |
| ICMR (Notice 377/2025) | Scientist-B (Non-Medical), Level 10 | A master's "in the subject related to Biomedical Sciences" | 35 | Qualifying test, then interview |
| ISRO centres (SAC:01:2026) | Scientist/Engineer 'SC', Level 10 | 65% in the M.Sc (or CGPA 6.84) and 60% in the B.Sc, for posts such as statistics and mathematics | 18 to 28 as on 12 February 2026 | Written test and interview |
| UPSC Geo-Scientist 2027 | Geologist, Chemist and Geophysicist posts in GSI; Scientist 'B' in CGWB | A master's in geology or a related subject, or an M.Sc in physics, chemistry or geophysics, depending on the post | 21 to 32 as on 1 January 2027 | Preliminary, main and interview |
DRDO shortlists on GATE score, so an M.Sc candidate needs a valid GATE score in the right paper as well as the degree. RAC has said the 2027 Scientist 'B' vacancies will be notified "in the next few" months.
BARC's one-year training course is paid: trainees get "a stipend of ₹ 74,000 per month" and a one-time book allowance of ₹30,000. Those who pass are posted as Scientific Officer 'C' at Level 10. Trainees must "execute an agreement and a Personal Indemnity Bond to serve DAE for at least three years after completion of training". The final selection "will be based solely on the performance in selection interview".
ISRO's main recruitment board takes engineering graduates. Its M.Sc posts come from individual centres: SAC Ahmedabad's Advertisement SAC:01:2026 and NRSC's RMT-1-2025 both had M.Sc posts in their own fields. The age limit of 28 is the lowest in this table.
UPSC's Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2027 was notified on 2 September 2026, with the preliminary on 10 January 2027 and the main on 19 and 20 June 2027. Category I has posts in the Geological Survey of India and Category II in the Central Ground Water Board. The preliminary carries one-third negative marking.
Which Route Fits
- If you want a PhD, a fellowship is the route. CSIR-UGC NET covers the five science subjects, and BRET covers biomedical research.
- If you want a job now, the scientist posts are the route. Check marks first: BARC and ISRO's centres need 60% in the B.Sc as well, and DRDO needs a first class.
- If you are over 30, the CSIR-UGC NET JRF is closed before relaxation, but BRET (35), DRDO (35) and ICMR (35) are not. UPSC's Geo-Scientist limit is 32.
- If you are under 26 with strong marks, BARC's training scheme pays a stipend from the start and leads to a Level 10 post.
- If your M.Sc is in geology, chemistry or physics, UPSC's Geo-Scientist examination is built for it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the JRF stipend after M.Sc?
₹37,000 a month for the first two years, rising to ₹42,000 as SRF after an assessment. These are the government rates effective from 1 January 2023. House rent allowance is paid where no hostel is provided.
What is the age limit for CSIR NET JRF?
30 years, counted on the first day of the month in which the exam ends, which is December 2026 for this cycle. It can be relaxed by up to five years for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwBD and third-gender candidates and for women. There is no age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission.
Can I become a scientist with just an M.Sc?
Yes. DRDO, BARC, ICMR, some ISRO centres and UPSC's Geo-Scientist examination all recruit M.Sc holders to scientist posts at Pay Level 10 without a PhD, subject to marks, age and the selection process.
Does DRDO take M.Sc for Scientist B?
Yes, in science disciplines. It needs at least a first-class M.Sc in the subject and a valid GATE score, since selection is on GATE score and interview.
Is there a bond for BARC OCES?
Yes. Trainees must sign an agreement and an indemnity bond to serve the Department of Atomic Energy for at least three years after the training.
In Summary
An M.Sc leads to government research in two ways. A fellowship, won through CSIR-UGC NET or BRET, pays ₹37,000 a month as JRF and supports a PhD. A scientist post at DRDO, BARC, ICMR, an ISRO centre or through UPSC's Geo-Scientist examination is a Level 10 job. Marks rules differ, from 55% in the master's for NET to 60% in both degrees for BARC. Age limits run from 26 for BARC to 35 for DRDO, ICMR and BRET. Many candidates prepare for both routes together.
