Government Exams After B.Sc: Science Posts, Forest Service, Graduate Jobs

Quick answer
A B.Sc opens every route open to graduates, plus posts that ask for science in particular — the Indian Forest Service, scientific and technical assistant posts at ISRO, CSIR and IMD, railway laboratory posts and statistics posts. This guide shows which subjects each asks for, the pay, and the conditions that catch science graduates out, from the current official notices.
A B.Sc is a graduate degree, so every recruitment that asks for "a degree in any discipline" is open to you. What sets it apart is a smaller group of posts that want science specifically — and these usually name the subject, not just the degree. Physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and computer science each open different doors, and some posts add first-class marks or experience. This guide sets out the science-specific routes from their current notices.

UPSC Indian Forest Service
The Indian Forest Service is the clearest science-graduate route to an all-India service. Its 2026 notice asks for "a Bachelor's degree with at least one of the subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology", or a bachelor's degree in agriculture, forestry or engineering. Final-year candidates may sit the written examination, and the age limit is 21 to 32. A B.Sc in a subject outside that list — biotechnology, say, or electronics alone — does not meet it unless it includes one of the listed subjects.
Scientific and Technical Assistant Posts
ISRO, CSIR laboratories and the India Meteorological Department recruit science graduates as assistants, and each names its subject:
- ISRO ISTRAC Scientific Assistant asked for a "First Class B.Sc. with Computer Science as main subject" for one post and "First Class B.Sc. with Mathematics as main subject" for another, at Level 7 (₹44,900). It took only those who had passed: "Students awaiting for final result need not apply."
- CSIR-NPL Technical Assistant asked for a "B.Sc. (Physics/Applied Physics) or equivalent, with 60% marks and one year experience in the relevant discipline", or the same in chemistry, at Level 6 — and the named subject "must be a main/core subject in B.Sc." This is not a fresher's route.
- IMD Scientific Assistant, recruited through SSC's Junior Engineer examination, accepts a "Bachelor's Degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects", or a degree in computer science, electronics and related fields.
Railway Laboratory Posts
The railways' Junior Engineer notice of 2026 added Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant posts at Level 6 (₹35,400), with an age limit of 18 to 33, for which the qualification is a "B.Sc. Degree in Physics and Chemistry". Like other railway recruitments, it does not take candidates awaiting results.
Statistics Posts Through SSC CGL
SSC's Combined Graduate Level examination has posts where a science background counts. The Junior Statistical Officer post asks for a degree in any subject "with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level", or a degree "with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level"; the Statistical Investigator Grade-II post asks for a bachelor's degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science and related subjects.
The Graduate Routes
Beyond these, a B.Sc meets the qualification for every recruitment open to graduates in any discipline — SSC CGL, bank PO and clerk examinations, railway graduate posts and UPSC's Civil Services. The government exams after graduation guide compares them, and the SSC exams after graduation guide covers SSC's graduate-level examinations.
What Catches Science Graduates Out
- The subject, not the degree. Science posts name subjects; check that yours was a main subject.
- First class or 60%. ISRO ISTRAC asked for first class; CSIR-NPL for 60%.
- Experience. Some technical assistant posts, like CSIR-NPL's, need a year's experience.
- The result date. ISRO ISTRAC and the railways exclude candidates awaiting results; UPSC's Forest Service admits them to the written examination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which government exams can I take after B.Sc?
Every graduate-level recruitment, plus science-specific routes such as the Indian Forest Service, scientific and technical assistant posts at ISRO, CSIR and IMD, railway laboratory posts and SSC's statistics posts.
Which B.Sc subjects are accepted for the Indian Forest Service?
The 2026 notice lists animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics and zoology, alongside degrees in agriculture, forestry and engineering.
Do science assistant posts need first class?
Some do. ISRO ISTRAC's Scientific Assistant posts asked for a first-class B.Sc; CSIR-NPL's Technical Assistant posts asked for 60%.
Is a B.Sc in computer science accepted for science posts?
For some. ISRO ISTRAC had a Scientific Assistant post for B.Sc computer science, and IMD's Scientific Assistant accepts computer science degrees. The Indian Forest Service list does not include it.
Can I apply for these in my final year?
It varies. UPSC's Forest Service admits final-year candidates to the written examination; ISRO ISTRAC, CSIR-NPL and the railways required results to be declared.
In Summary
A B.Sc opens every graduate route and, on top of them, posts that ask for science by name: the Indian Forest Service, scientific and technical assistant posts at ISRO, CSIR and IMD, railway laboratory posts and SSC's statistics posts. Each names its subjects, and some add first class, 60% or experience. Read the subject list first, then the marks and result-date rules.
