Government Exams After Post Graduation: NET, PGT, RBI and Translator Routes

Quick answer
A master's degree opens routes a bachelor's cannot — college teaching through UGC-NET, school teaching as a PGT, specialist officer posts such as RBI's economics and statistics cadres, and central translator posts. This guide compares their marks, age and final-year rules from the current official notices.
Most government recruitments stop at a bachelor's degree, so a master's degree matters mainly for the posts that require one. Those are fewer but distinct: teaching in colleges and senior school classes, specialist officer cadres that want a subject at master's level, and language posts. Most ask for minimum marks in the master's, so the percentage you finish with matters as much as the degree. This guide sets them out from their current notices.

UGC-NET: College Teaching and Research
UGC-NET is "a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for 'award of Junior Research Fellowship and appointment as Assistant Professor'", and NET "shall remain the minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors". The December 2026 bulletin asks for "at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master's Degree or equivalent" — 50% for OBC (non-creamy layer), SC, ST, persons with disabilities and third-gender candidates.
You can sit it before you finish: candidates "pursuing their Master's degree" or awaiting the final result "may also apply", provisionally, but must complete the master's "within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks". There is no upper age limit for Assistant Professor eligibility; for the Junior Research Fellowship it is 30.
PGT: Senior School Teaching
Post Graduate Teachers in KVS and NVS schools are at "Level-8 (Rs.47600-151100)", with an age limit of 40. Notification 01/2025 asked for a "Master Degree from a recognized institution/University with at least 50% marks in aggregate in the concerned subject" and a B.Ed. with at least 50% — or an integrated post-graduate course with B.Ed. — and for some subjects, such as economics, history and geography, the subject must also have been studied at graduation. Qualifications had to be held by the closing date. See the PGT job profile, PRT vs TGT vs PGT and government teacher salary.
RBI Grade B: Where the Master's Subject Matters
RBI's Grade B officers start at a basic pay of "₹78,450/-p.m.", with an age limit of 21 to 30. For the General cadre a master's is one route among two: "Graduation in any discipline … with minimum 60% marks … or Post-Graduation in any discipline … with minimum 55% marks". For the specialist cadres it is required — DEPR asks for an "MA/ MSc in Economics" or related courses with 55%, and DSIM for a "Master's Degree with a minimum 55% marks" in statistics-related subjects. See the RBI Grade B guide and, for a similar route, NABARD Grade A.
Translator Posts
SSC's Combined Hindi Translators Examination recruits Junior Hindi Translators at Level 6 and Senior Hindi Translators at Level 7. It asks for a "Master's degree of a recognized University in Hindi with English as a compulsory or elective subject", or in English with Hindi, or in another subject with both languages — plus a translation diploma or two years' translation experience for the junior posts, three for the senior.
What Decides Between Them
- Your percentage. NET and RBI's specialist cadres need 55%; PGT needs 50%.
- Your subject. Each route wants a master's in a particular subject — the NET subject, the teaching subject, economics or statistics, Hindi or English.
- Your B.Ed. PGT needs one; the others do not.
- Your timing. NET takes candidates still finishing; PGT and SSC require the master's by their dates.
The graduate routes remain open too, through the bachelor's degree you already hold — though a few recruiters bar higher qualifications outright, so read the notice; see can a higher qualification make you ineligible and government exams after graduation.
