Quick answer

What the Railway Protection Force Sub-Inspector post pays, who can apply, how the CBT, physical test and measurements work, what an SI actually does on a railway division, and where the career goes from there — taken from the RRB's own recruitment notice rather than coaching-site summaries.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is an armed force of the Union under the Ministry of Railways, responsible for the security of railway property, passenger areas and the people using them. Its Sub-Inspector (Executive) is the first supervisory rank you can join directly — one step above the RPF Constable, and open to any graduate.

The Post at a Glance

The figures below are from the RRBs' notice for the last SI recruitment (CEN RPF 01/2024, 452 posts). Each new notice restates them, so check the current one before relying on any number.

Age relaxation for SC/ST, OBC and other categories applies on top of the upper limit, as in any central recruitment.

How Selection Works

There are three stages, in this order:

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT) — 120 questions in 90 minutes at graduation level: Arithmetic (35 marks), General Intelligence and Reasoning (35) and General Awareness (50). There is negative marking of one-third of a mark for each wrong answer, and marks are normalised across shifts.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Measurement Test (PMT) — up to ten times the vacancies in each category are called, in CBT merit order. Both are qualifying only: they carry no marks, but failing either ends the application.
  3. Document Verification and medical examination.

Because the physical tests carry no marks, your final rank comes from the CBT. The PET is a gate, not a score.

The Physical Efficiency Test

EventMaleFemale
Run1,600 m in 6 min 30 s800 m in 4 min
Long jump12 ft9 ft
High jump3 ft 9 in3 ft

The run is attempted once. Long jump and high jump allow up to two chances each. Ex-servicemen are exempt from the PET but must still pass the measurements.

The Physical Measurement Test

CategoryHeight (male)Height (female)Chest, male (unexpanded / expanded)
UR / EWS / OBC165 cm157 cm80 / 85 cm
SC / ST160 cm152 cm76.2 / 81.2 cm
Garhwalis, Gorkhas, Marathas, Dogras, Kumaonese and other notified categories163 cm155 cm80 / 85 cm

A male candidate below the minimum height is not measured for chest at all — he is disqualified at the height check. Chest is measured for men only. You can test your own measurements against these with the physical standards checker.

The Medical Standard

B-1 is stricter than many candidates expect. The notice states plainly that candidates who wear glasses, or have flat foot, knock knees, a squint or colour blindness, are not eligible for appointment. If you wear spectacles, find that out before you spend months preparing, not after the CBT.

What an RPF SI Actually Does

An SI is a supervisory officer at a post or outpost on a railway division. The work typically includes:

  • Leading constables on duty at stations, yards, goods sheds and on trains.
  • Registering and investigating cases under the laws the RPF enforces — chiefly offences against railway property and offences under the Railways Act.
  • Crowd control at large stations, especially during festivals and special trains.
  • Escorting trains and responding to passenger complaints.

It is shift-based uniformed work, and postings follow the railway network — expect to serve away from home, and to move between stations and divisions over a career.

Pay in Practice

Level 6 is the same pay level as an RRB JE and a Station Master, so the basic pay is identical to those posts at entry. What changes take-home pay is the same set of allowances as other central government staff — Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance by city class, and transport allowance — plus uniform and force-specific allowances. The railway salary guide explains how those components stack, and the salary calculator works out take-home pay for a given basic and city.

Career Growth

Promotion runs Sub-Inspector → Inspector → Assistant Security Commissioner, on seniority, vacancies and departmental requirements; there is no fixed timetable you can count on. Senior gazetted officers of the force are recruited separately, through the UPSC Civil Services Examination, so an SI's path to the very top ranks is through promotion rather than direct entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the qualification for RPF Sub-Inspector?

Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university, completed by the last date of application. Candidates still awaiting their final results cannot apply.

Is there negative marking in the RPF SI exam?

Yes. One-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer in the CBT. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

Do the physical tests add to my marks?

No. The PET and PMT are qualifying only. Your merit position comes from the CBT; the physical tests decide only whether you stay in the race.

Can I join as an RPF SI if I wear glasses?

Not under the B-1 medical standard the last notice prescribed — it lists glasses among the conditions that make a candidate ineligible for appointment. Check the medical clause of the current notice.
