Quick answer

UPSC runs far more than the civil services exam. This guide maps every examination the Commission holds — what each recruits for, who can sit it and how it is structured — so you can see which UPSC exam actually fits your qualification and age, instead of assuming the IAS route is the only one.

"UPSC" is usually shorthand for the Civil Services Examination, but the Union Public Service Commission recruits for the central government through around a dozen examinations every year — for engineers, doctors, defence officers, police commanders, economists, statisticians and geologists as well as administrators. Many candidates who would never sit the CSE are eligible for one of the others. This guide maps them all.

For the latest UPSC notices and results, see civil services vacancies.

The Civil Services Examination

The CSE fills the IAS, IPS, Indian Foreign Service and more than twenty central services through one examination in three stages: a qualifying preliminary, a written main examination, and a personality test. It is open to any graduate, which is why it draws the largest field of any exam in the country. The UPSC Civil Services guide explains the structure and the services; the CSE exam hub carries the current cycle.

The Indian Forest Service shares the CSE's preliminary examination — IFoS candidates are screened through it — before sitting a separate main examination in their science or engineering subjects.

Engineering Services (ESE)

The ESE recruits engineers into Group A services such as the railway engineering services, central engineering services and defence engineering services, in four streams: civil, mechanical, electrical, and electronics and telecommunication. It has a preliminary, a conventional main examination and a personality test. See the ESE guide and the ESE exam hub — and if you have not decided between the ESE and PSUs, ESE vs the GATE-PSU route.

Combined Medical Services (CMS)

The CMS is the central route for MBBS doctors — into the Central Health Service, the railways' medical service, ordnance factories, the municipal health services of Delhi and similar posts. It is a computer-based test followed by a personality test. The CMS guide covers the posts, the pay and the service conditions.

The Defence Examinations: NDA and CDS

UPSC conducts both of the main written examinations for defence officer entry, each twice a year. The NDA takes candidates straight after Class 12 into a three-year joint academy; the CDS takes graduates into the individual service academies. Both written exams are followed by the services' own SSB interview, which UPSC does not run. See the NDA guide, the CDS guide, and the NDA hub and CDS hub for current cycles; NDA vs CDS compares the two.

CAPF Assistant Commandant

This exam recruits officers — Assistant Commandants — into the Central Armed Police Forces. After the written papers come physical standards and efficiency tests, a medical examination and an interview. The CAPF Assistant Commandant guide covers the forces and the career, and the CAPF exam hub the current cycle.

IES / ISS and Combined Geo-Scientist

These are the smaller, specialist examinations, and they are where a postgraduate in economics, statistics or the earth sciences has a direct route into a Group A service without competing in the CSE. The IES and ISS are held together; the Combined Geo-Scientist examination has its own preliminary, main and personality stages and recruits for bodies such as the Geological Survey of India and the Central Ground Water Board.

Recruitment Without a Full Examination

Beyond the named examinations, UPSC fills many posts by recruitment tests — a written test followed by an interview, as for some EPFO officer posts — and by selection on interview alone for specialist and senior posts advertised through its recruitment notices. These are advertised individually rather than on the annual calendar, so they are easy to miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many exams does UPSC conduct in a year?

Around a dozen named examinations — some, like the NDA and CDS, held twice — plus recruitment tests and interview-only selections advertised through the year. UPSC publishes the dates of the named examinations in an annual calendar.

Is UPSC only for IAS and IPS?

No. The Civil Services Examination is the best-known, but UPSC also recruits engineers (ESE), doctors (CMS), defence officers (NDA, CDS), armed police officers (CAPF), forest officers (IFoS), economists and statisticians (IES/ISS) and geoscientists.

Does UPSC conduct the SSB interview for NDA and CDS?

No. UPSC conducts the written examination; the SSB interview and medical examination are conducted by the services themselves, and the final merit combines both.

Can I sit more than one UPSC exam in the same year?

Yes, provided you are eligible for each and their dates do not clash. Many engineers, for example, sit both the CSE and the ESE.
