What Is RRB ALP?

Assistant Loco Pilot is the entry-level running-staff post that supports the Loco Pilot (train driver) in operating and monitoring a locomotive while it's in motion. It's the starting point of a defined promotion path toward Loco Pilot itself.

RRB ALP Eligibility

Educational Qualification: Class 10th pass plus an ITI certificate in a notified trade, or a three-year Diploma (or a full Engineering degree, accepted in lieu of the diploma) in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering, or an Act Apprenticeship in a notified trade.

RRB ALP Exam Pattern

Selection runs through CBT 1 → CBT 2 → CBAT, followed by document verification and the medical examination.

CBT 1 (screening only — marks aren't carried into final merit): 75 questions for 75 marks over 60 minutes, covering Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Science.

CBT 2: 175 questions total, split into two parts.

• Part A (100 questions, 90 minutes): Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and Basic Science and Engineering — this part's marks feed into final merit.
• Part B (75 questions, 60 minutes): trade-specific questions matching the candidate's declared ITI trade — qualifying in nature, not counted toward merit, but you must clear it to proceed.

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test): a psychometric assessment of mental ability, decision-making and reaction-time-related skills, relevant because the role demands sustained concentration in a safety-critical environment. As with NTPC's CBAT, each test battery requires an independently-cleared minimum T-score of 42.

Final merit weights CBT 2 Part A and CBAT equally — 50% each.

Medical Standards: The A-1 Category

This is where ALP differs most sharply from other railway exams. ALP requires the A-1 medical standard — the strictest vision and fitness classification in Indian Railways, because Loco Pilots and Assistant Loco Pilots are directly responsible for train safety.

• Vision: 6/6 in each eye, unaided (no glasses or contact lenses permitted for meeting the standard).
• Colour vision: must be entirely normal — colour blindness is an absolute disqualification for A-1, with no exceptions.
• Night vision: must be normal, tested via a dark-adaptation test — night blindness is also disqualifying.
• Field of vision and binocular vision: must also meet normal standards as part of the medical examination.

Candidates who wear glasses to achieve normal vision, or who have any degree of colour blindness or night blindness, will not clear the A-1 medical standard regardless of exam performance — this is worth checking honestly before investing months of preparation, since it's a hard disqualifier, not something that can be corrected with better exam scores.

Job Profile

An Assistant Loco Pilot works alongside the Loco Pilot in the cab, observing signals and track conditions along the route and communicating them to the Loco Pilot, monitoring locomotive gauges and vital indicators, and assisting with basic checks and record-keeping during the run. Training happens substantially on the job, under the supervision of experienced Loco Pilots, building toward independently handling a locomotive.

ALPs are typically promoted to Senior Assistant Loco Pilot and, over a timeline commonly cited as roughly 3 to 8 years of service (varying by zone and vacancy availability), to Loco Pilot itself. RRB ALP suits ITI-qualified or diploma/degree-holding candidates in a relevant technical trade who are genuinely comfortable with a safety-critical, running-staff role — irregular hours, time away from base on long runs, and a strict medical standard that must be met and maintained.
