Quick answer
A public sector bank Probationary Officer and an RBI Assistant are both graduate jobs in banking, but at different levels — one an officer post, the other an assistant post in the central bank. This guide compares their pay, age limits, qualifications, local language rules and selection stages, from IBPS's PO/MT-XVI and RBI's latest Assistant notification.
Graduates interested in banking often weigh a Probationary Officer post in a public sector bank against an Assistant post in the Reserve Bank of India. They are not the same level: a PO is an officer in a commercial bank, while an RBI Assistant works at the support level of the central bank. Both are recruited by examination, and both take graduates in any discipline, but their pay, marks rules, language requirements and selection differ. This guide sets them side by side from their current notices — see the IBPS PO and RBI Assistant exam pages for each cycle's dates.

The Role and Pay
A bank PO is recruited as an officer: IBPS's CRP PO/MT-XVI places POs on a basic pay of "₹ 48480-2000/7-62480-2340/2-67160-2680/7-85920". The RBI Assistant post is the central bank's support grade, with "a starting basic pay of ₹29,000/- per month" and "initial Monthly Gross Emoluments (without HRA) … approximately ₹58,514/-", plus house rent allowance of 15% of pay where accommodation is not provided. Bank pay is set by the banks' own scales, not the government pay matrix. See the RBI Assistant guide.
Eligibility
- Marks. IBPS PO asks only for "A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline". RBI Assistant asks for "a minimum of 50% marks (pass class for SC/ ST/ PwBD candidates) in the aggregate" — and a percentage below 50 is not rounded up: "49.99% will be treated as less than 50%."
- Age. PO runs to 30; RBI Assistant to 28, before relaxation.
- Result date. IBPS PO requires the final result "declared on or before 21.07.2026". RBI Assistant fixes eligibility "as on 01/02/2026", with the date of passing taken from the marksheet; neither has a clause for final-year students.
The Local Language
RBI Assistants are recruited office by office, and "Candidates applying for post in a particular Recruiting Office should be proficient in the language (i.e., know to read, write, speak and understand the language) of the state". After the main examination, candidates take a Language Proficiency Test in the office's language, and "Candidate not proficient in the Official/ Local Language shall be disqualified." So an RBI Assistant applicant chooses an office whose language they know. IBPS PO has no such office-by-office test.
Selection
IBPS PO runs an online preliminary, an online main examination, and then "a Personality Test and subsequently … Common Interview", with one-fourth of a question's marks deducted for each wrong answer in the objective tests.
RBI Assistant runs an online preliminary — English 30, numerical ability 35 and reasoning 35, 100 marks in 60 minutes — and an online main examination of five tests of 40 marks each, including general awareness and computer knowledge, 200 marks in 135 minutes, with "1/4th marks … deducted for each wrong answer". Final selection is on the online examinations, "qualifying in LPT", medical fitness and verification — there is no interview.
Which Suits Whom
- If you want an officer post, the PO route; the RBI Assistant post is a support grade.
- If your degree is below 50%, only the PO route is open of the two.
- If you are 29 or 30, PO is still open; RBI Assistant (before relaxation) is not.
- If you know a regional language well, RBI Assistant tests it — and requires it for your chosen office.
- If interviews are your weak point, RBI Assistant has none.
