Government Exams After 10th: SSC, Railways, India Post, Defence Routes

15 Oct 2026

  • Qualification
  • Eligibility

Quick answer

Class 10 is enough for several large central recruitments — SSC's MTS and GD Constable, the railways' Level 1 posts, India Post's Gramin Dak Sevaks and the Army's Agniveers. This guide compares what each asks for, the pay it leads to, the age window and how candidates are selected, from the current official notices.

Matriculation is the minimum for some of the largest recruitments the central government runs. They are very different jobs — an office assistant, an armed police constable, a railway trackman, a village postmaster, a soldier — and they select in different ways: by written test, by physical test, or simply by your Class 10 marks. This guide sets them side by side from their current notices.

For every live vacancy open to you today, see jobs for 10th pass. On 15 October 2026, 248 live job posts on SarkariJobTrack named Class 10 as their minimum qualification.

SSC MTS and Havaldar

The Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldar examination recruits Multi-Tasking Staff "in Pay Level-1" and Havaldars in the revenue departments. The qualification is that candidates "must have passed Matriculation Examination or equivalent" by the cut-off date, and the result "must have been declared by the Board by the specified date" — "Mere processing of the result … does not fulfill the EQ requirement." The age is 18–25 for MTS and 18–27 for Havaldar and some MTS posts. The latest notice at the time of writing is the 2025 cycle. The SSC exams after 10th guide covers SSC's 10th-level examinations in more detail.

SSC Constable (GD)

The Constable (GD) examination recruits to the Central Armed Police Forces, the SSF and Assam Rifles, at "Pay Level – 3 (₹21,700/- to ₹ 69,100/-) for all the posts" — two levels above most other 10th-level routes. The qualification is Matriculation by 1 January 2026, and "Candidates, who have not acquired the essential educational qualification as on the stipulated date … will not be eligible and need not to apply." The age window is short: 18 to 23 as on 1 January 2026. The physical standards and tests are covered in the CAPF constable guide.

RRB Level 1 (Group D)

The railways' Level 1 posts — track maintainers, assistants in workshops and depots, pointsmen and others — start at ₹18,000, with an age limit of 18 to 33. The qualification is "10th pass or ITI or equivalent or National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC)". One rule surprises engineering students: "Diploma /Degree in Engineering will not be accepted in lieu of Course Completed Act Apprentices/ITI for the post of Level-1 unless otherwise specified." See the RRB Group D guide.

India Post Gramin Dak Sevak: Selection on Your 10th Marks

The Gramin Dak Sevak engagement is the one route with no examination. Applicants "will be shortlisted for engagement on the basis of a system-generated merit list", prepared "on the basis of marks obtained … in Secondary School Examination of 10th standard". So your Class 10 marks, to four decimal places, decide it.

Two conditions are particular to it:

  • Mathematics and English. The qualification is a 10th certificate "with passing marks in Mathematics and English".
  • The local language. "The applicant should have studied the local language at least up to 10th Standard."

The pay is a Time Related Continuity Allowance rather than a pay level — "Rs.10,000/- to Rs.24,470/-" for Assistant Branch Postmasters and Dak Sevaks, and "Rs.12,000/- to Rs.29,380/-" for Branch Postmasters — and the age limit is 18 to 40.

Army Agniveer (General Duty)

The Agnipath scheme recruits Agniveers to the Army. For General Duty, the notification issued for the 2027 recruiting year by the Army Recruiting Office, Secunderabad, asks for "Class 10th /Matric pass with 45% marks in aggregate of five basic subjects and min 33% marks in each", with an age of 17½ to 22. An ITI or diploma earns bonus marks in the selection. See the Agniveer guide for the scheme's terms.

What Decides Between Them

  • Your age. GD Constable closes at 23 and Agniveer at 22; RRB Level 1 runs to 33 and GDS to 40.
  • Your marks. GDS is decided by your Class 10 marks alone; Agniveer GD needs 45% in aggregate; the others need a pass.
  • Your fitness. GD Constable, RRB Level 1, Havaldar and Agniveer include physical tests; MTS and GDS do not.
  • The pay. GD Constable starts at Level 3; MTS and RRB Level 1 at Level 1; GDS is paid an allowance, not a pay level.
  • Your languages. GDS needs the local language up to Class 10.
